5 Magical Cenotes Near Playa del Carmen You'll Definitely Love
The Riviera Maya sits on a limestone shelf riddled with cenotes — natural freshwater pools, some open to the sky, some hidden in caves. Here are five near Playa del Carmen worth building a day around. Most are a 20–40 minute drive out of town, so having your own car makes it far easier to hit two or three in a day at your own pace.
1. Cenote Yax-Kin
Such a lovely cenote, especially if you're going with kids. Calm, comfortable, with lounge chairs to relax, swim, dive, and even spot little fish. Very easy, laid-back family vibe without the crowds.
2. Kantun Chi
This isn't just one cenote — it's five cenotes in one place, and each feels different. The real magic is the underground cave with stalactites — seriously impressive. You can easily spend a whole day here.
3. Cenote Azul
Beautiful and one of the locals' favorites. The water color is unreal. It's popular, so come early — mornings have a totally different atmosphere. And yes, there's a cliff for jumping into the water.
4. Cenote Santa Cruz
If you want something less touristy — this is it. Clean, beautiful, away from the busier routes, with almost a hidden-gem feel.
5. Cenote Cristalino
A classic for a reason. Crystal-clear water, a gorgeous natural pool, and perfect for both swimming and snorkeling. If we were introducing friends to their very first cenote, we'd bring them here.
What to bring
- Water shoes and a rash guard

Cenote-hopping needs a car that handles jungle roads comfortably.
