Cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula: Hidden Underground Rivers

More than 10,000 cenotes are scattered across the Yucatán Peninsula. These natural sinkholes aren't just beautiful jungle pools — they're entrances to one of the largest underground river systems in the world.

Because the Yucatán is formed from limestone, there are almost no surface rivers in the region. Over thousands of years, rainwater carved an enormous network of underground caves, tunnels, and freshwater rivers. When the ceiling of a cave collapsed, a cenote was formed.

For the ancient Maya civilization, cenotes were the main source of fresh water and were considered sacred places.

One of the most famous underground systems is Sac Actún near Tulum. With more than 386 kilometers (240 miles) of explored passages, it's one of the longest underwater cave systems on Earth.

Why you need a car to see the good ones

Today, cenotes are among the top attractions in the Riviera Maya, and one of the best reasons to rent a car in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. Many of the most beautiful cenotes are hidden deep in the jungle and are difficult to reach without your own transportation.

If you want to explore the real Yucatán Peninsula beyond the tourist zones, having your own rental car gives you the freedom to discover remote cenotes, beaches, and authentic local destinations at your own pace.
