How to Do Xcaret in One Day
Xcaret is the crown jewel of Quintana Roo, with over a million visitors every year. If you only have one day, here's a route that lets you experience the highlights without wasting time on the less essential stuff.
What to bring
Bug spray, hat, rash guard, sunscreen, swim gear, towel, and a reusable water bottle (there are refill stations in the park). Snacks if you want.
If possible, get Xcaret Plus. It includes lockers, snorkel gear, buffet lunch, and unlimited beer and soft drinks — very worth it.
There are 50+ attractions in the park, so doing everything in one day is impossible. This plan helps you see the best.
The route
- Arrive early. The park opens at 8:30 am. Skip the souvenir shops and photos at the giant Xcaret sign, flamingos and parrots for now — mornings are crowded there. Come back later.
- Change and go straight to the underground river. Follow signs for Tres Ríos. The swim takes about an hour and it's one of the absolute highlights of Xcaret.
- Around 10:30 — beach time. At the end of the river, relax at the beach with hammocks, loungers and umbrellas. Perfect time to enjoy the Caribbean before it gets too hot.
- Snorkeling and sea turtles. Next door there's a protected cove with amazing snorkeling (spot #30 on the map), plus natural pools where you can often see giant sea turtles from shore.
- 1:00 pm — lunch. Buffet time. Food is surprisingly good and varied, so pick any restaurant and enjoy.
- Shower, change and explore. On the way, stop at the archaeological areas for photos. You'll probably see iguanas, agoutis, coatis, parrots and flamingos — maybe even monkeys if you're lucky.
- 3:00 pm — Río del Paraíso boat ride. After lunch, slow down and take the boat through the jungle. Super peaceful.
- Pueblo Maya + Mexican Cemetery. Don't skip the Mayan Village and especially the colorful Mexican cemetery — one of the most unique spots in the park. Near it, grab a coffee and try the pastries at the little bakery (Panadería / Pan Caliente).
- Walk toward the Aviary. Along the way you'll pass artisans making traditional Mexican crafts right in front of you.
- Aviary + Butterfly Pavilion (open until 6 pm). Even if you're short on time — don't skip these. The Aviary is incredible: a cave-like sanctuary around a cenote with waterfalls and rare birds everywhere. The Butterfly Pavilion is magical — butterflies may land on your hands and hair.
The grand finale: Xcaret México Espectacular
The evening show starts at 7 pm, and it's a must. If you still have time before the show, stop by the little church over the cenote, or ride the Scenic Tower (last ride around 6:30 pm), right next to the theater. Before the show, walk around — performers often start entertaining outside early.
After the show, you'll still have time for souvenirs, if you still have energy left.
